Human males, known as “man,” are not born with eggs. Instead, males produce sperm within their testicles. Male sperm has to get physically close to the egg residing within the female uterus, and the vagina provides the most efficient pathway. That requires the male’s penis to get an erection (aka woody). The brain’s autonomic nervous system is composed of sympathetic and parasympathetic. The parasympathetic nervous system enables a male erection by relaxing the bulbospongiosus muscle to allow blood to flow into the penis to insert into the female’s vagina. The sympathetic nervous system is used for ejaculation of sperm needed to fertilize the egg residing inside the uterus, by way of the vagina. An easy pneumonic to remember is “point” (parasympathetic NS) and “shoot” (sympathetic NS). Yeah, I know, it’s complicated huh.
